As a Community Development Worker, my role is to work with communities and voluntary organisations within these areas to develop community cohesion (learning to live and work together) and to empower communities (helping communities to help themselves).
Part of my role is to develop and support existing and new projects, organisations or groups by providing information and appropriate support, relating to funding opportunities. Big Lottery Community Buildings Fund
The BIG Lottery Fund is investing an additional £75 million specifically for rural and urban community-use buildings through its flagship programme, Reaching Communities. From early December 2010, voluntary and community sector organisations and parish and town councils across England will be able to apply for capital funding from BIG of between £100,000 to £500,000. The money will be available for all types of multipurpose buildings used by communities including memorial halls, community centres and village halls. Each project should have a total value of no more than £750,000. The new funding stream has been designed with a view to transforming current buildings into community buildings which can offer a wide range of activities benefiting a broad group of citizens. Applications will be assessed on a monthly rolling basis taking the pressure off applicants having to rush through an outline proposal. Organisations can register for further information by calling 0845 4 10 20 30 Full details of the Big Lottery Fund programmes and grant awards are available on the website: www.biglotteryfund.org.uk
Big Lottery Fund – ‘Lighter-touch’ Reaching Communities
The Big Lottery Fund is introducing a “lighter-touch” Reaching Communities application process for organisations seeking grants of up to £40,000 a year. In response to its major public BIG Thinking consultation last year on the future of BIG programmes, the lottery distributor has made some changes to its flagship Reaching Communities programme.
All applicants will learn at an earlier stage whether their project has a decent chance of being funded, so that those that are invited to the second stage will have a much higher chance of success. More than three-quarters of people that responded to the consultation said they wanted earlier decisions on applications, based on a few key questions at the enquiry stage - even if that meant rejection; and those applicants seeking up to £40,000 will face a simpler application and assessment process.
In the pipeline to be launched in the autumn is a dedicated capital funding stream that BIG hopes will help to fill the “large, unmet demand” for funding for community buildings. This is anticipated to fund medium-sized refurbishment, new builds or extensions to community centres, village halls or other community-use buildings. In total the various parts of the Reaching Communities programme will be funded to the tune of at least £100m a year for each of the next five years. Grants will range from £10,000 to £500,000.
Children in Need
Children in Need is offering small grants of up to £10,000 a year for three years for third sector organisations working with children and young people.
It is the first time the organisation has run a UK-wide small grants programme, and follows a pilot in Scotland. The scheme is designed to reach organisations that have not previously considered applying for Children in Need funding.
Grants will be allocated in four tranches, with application deadlines on 15 January, 15 April, 15 July and 15 October.
Any not-for-profit organisation working with children and young people under the age of 18 can apply, with some exclusions such as projects carrying out medical research or promoting religion. Decisions are expected to be made within 14 weeks of the closing date of each round.
Funding will be allocated at local level through seven regional UK bases in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Climate Friendly Communities
A new grant fund has been launched to enable community groups in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to organise projects and events that help their community to act on climate change.

The fund will be administered by the RCC (Rural Community Council for Leicestershire and Rutland) as part of its Communities Cutting Carbon project, which seeks to support community groups to take environmental action in their local area.
The funding is available thanks to the support of the East Midlands Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP) and each of the local authorities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Community groups can bid for any amount from £200 to £5000. Some examples of activities that could be funded are:
- Room hire and materials for public events
- Start-up costs for local food growing projects
- Equipment for energy saving projects
Andrew Reeves, the RCC’s Community Climate Change Officer, said “More and more people are feeling inspired to work together with their friends and neighbours to make their communities into cleaner and greener places to live. If you’re inspired to act, then support from our Climate Friendly Communities project, and money from our new grant fund, can set you off to a fine start.”
