Carers
If you are looking after anyone of any age on a daily basis then you are a carer. Anybody can be a carer and carers do many different things from helping someone to wash and dress themselves to giving medicines to generally helping someone else get on with their daily life. Carers also provide emotional support for the person they are caring for.
The Definition of Carer is:
‘someone who, without payment, Provides help and support to a relative, friend or neighbour, who could not manage to stay at home without their help due to age, sickness, addiction or disability’
Our Carers Project identifies and supports carers in the Hinckley & Bosworth area. This means that we are here to support you. We can help you by giving you the right information right from the beginning and have information on all aspects of caring.
We offer advice, support and information, we are able to apply for the Carers support grant for carers, help with filling in of the Carers impact assessment form, also the First Contact form and we can report Hate incidents. We have a monthly support group on the first Tuesday of the month with relevant speakers, a newsletter four times a year which goes out before our information forum and again we have relevant speakers and stands, and occasionally we have trips to various venues.
The project is coordinated by Carole Lenton and if you are a new or existing carer and would like to contact Carole then please email her on carers@vahb.org.uk or ring 01455 231998. For further information please click on the relevant button to the left.
Carers Assessment
What is a Carers Assessment and how do I get one?
A carers assessment is a set of questions that will identify how caring impacts on a carer's life and it helps us to determine what support we might be able to offer. (Assessment of carers can take place even when the person for whom you care refuses help, or an assessment, for themselves)
In Leicestershire, adult carers who are providing in excess of 10 hours of care per week for a person age 18 or over, have a right to a carer’s assessment. Young people caring for an adult family member will receive an assessment even if they are caring for less than 10 hours per week.
Self Assessment
Carers can self assess the impact of caring on their life and indicate what support solutions may be desirable to lessen the negative impact caring may involve
- fill in the online Impact of Caring self assessment at http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/social_services/carers/carer_help/carer_assessment.htm
- or print the printable Impact of Caring self assessment, to complete and return to County Hall, Glenfield
Assessment by a member of staff
Assessment by a Social Service staff member can determine the type and amount of care you are giving. Contact your local office to request one. This is Hinckley 01455 636964.

Carers Emergency Card Scheme
If you provide unpaid care or support to someone who lives in Leicestershire, this scheme gives you peace of mind that, should something happen to you or you have on emergency, the person you care for will still receive help and support in your absence.
Once you have been assessed by the local authority as being eligible for the scheme, you will receive support with planning for emergencies as well as a Carer's Emergency Response Card. This is the size of a credit card so you will be able to carry it around with you.
If something should happen that means you are unable to provide regular support to your loved one/friend, then Housing 21 will organise support detailed in your emergency plan on your behalf. Alternatively, we will directly provide support to the individual until alternative arrangements can be made. This can be for up to 48 hours (72 hours over a bank holiday weekend).
